Dongguan Manufacturing

The injection molding and tooling capital of the world. If your product needs a mold, odds are high it will be cut in Dongguan — for a fraction of Western prices.

Dongguan sits directly north of Shenzhen, forming the northern anchor of the PRD manufacturing corridor. While Shenzhen dominates electronics assembly, Dongguan owns the heavier end: injection molding, tooling, die casting, sheet metal stamping, and mechanical assembly. The city's 2025 mold output exceeded 600 billion RMB, accounting for 15% of China's total. A standard two-plate mold for a smartphone-sized ABS housing costs $2,000-4,000 here versus $8,000-15,000 in Western markets.

The city has roughly 10 million people and a manufacturing ecosystem hundreds deep. Mold shops range from family-run two-plate specialists to ISO-certified facilities with 5-axis CNC and EDM. Competition benefits buyers: lead times and prices are among the best in the world.

Chang'an (长安) is the heart of tooling. Most injection molds for consumer electronics housings are designed, cut, and tested here. The Shenzhen-Dongguan shuttle operates at its peak in Chang'an: Shenzhen brands run PCBA in Shenzhen, then truck boards here for enclosure molding and final assembly.

Humen (虎门) is the garment and fashion center — women's wear, denim, fast fashion, accessories, and footwear. Major export production base.

Dalang (大朗) is one of China's largest woolen knitwear bases. Thousands of sweater and knitwear factories.

Houjie (厚街) handles footwear, furniture, and hotel supplies. Major furniture exhibition center.

Tangxia (塘厦) is where the Shenzhen-Dongguan shuttle most visibly operates — injection molding and plastic enclosures for Shenzhen-designed electronics.

Qingxi (清溪) is the electronics OEM/ODM zone. Contract manufacturers handle full production for brands outsourcing assembly.

Fenggang (凤岗) focuses on smart home devices, IoT products, and consumer electronics accessories.

Dalingshan (大岭山) is China's top furniture export town — 2025 output exceeding 400 billion RMB. If your product involves furniture or large wood assemblies, start here.

Dongguan's "Smart Manufacturing 2025" initiative has driven over 60% digital transformation among above-scale enterprises, with automated production lines, industrial robots, and MES systems now standard.

The mold industry is digitizing: 3D printing for rapid tooling, AI-driven mold flow analysis, and digital twin simulation reduce sampling cycles from weeks to days.

Integration with Shenzhen's cross-border e-commerce has created factories that handle 50-500 unit batches with 5-7 day turnaround — impossible for traditional injection molders a decade ago.

Mold shops that are actually trading companies

Many offices claiming to be mold factories subcontract to real shops, adding 20-40% markup. Visit the shop floor.

Mold quality varies enormously by price

A $2,000 and $6,000 mold may look identical on a quote but differ in surface finish, cycle time, and tool life. Specify steel grade, cavitation, and expected cycles.

English capability is lower than Shenzhen

Factory floors have significantly less English. Bring a translator or bilingual agent for technical discussions.

MOQs can be higher than expected

Injection molders may require 1,000-5,000 unit minimums for new customers. Verify MOQs early.

Dongguan turns Shenzhen designs into physical products

If your product has plastic enclosures or mechanical assemblies, your factory is probably here.

Invest in good tooling

A well-made mold with proper steel grade pays for itself in cycle time, quality, and tool life.

Visit Chang'an for mold shops

Visit 5-10 shops in a day. Bring 3D files and be ready to discuss gate placement and surface finish.
