Guangzhou Manufacturing
The logistics backbone of the PRD and home to China's largest trade fair — plus massive clusters in cosmetics, leather goods, denim, and automotive.
Guangzhou is the PRD's logistics and trade capital. It hosts the Canton Fair — the world's largest import and export trade fair — and provides the port, air freight, and rail infrastructure that moves PRD-manufactured goods to global markets. Nansha Port's 2025 container throughput exceeded 22 million TEU, making it one of the world's top deep-water ports. But Guangzhou is far more than logistics: it has massive manufacturing clusters in cosmetics, leather goods, denim, jewelry, and automotive that are globally significant in their own right.
For hardware founders, Guangzhou plays a dual role. If you need logistics infrastructure (trade fair access, port services, freight forwarding), Guangzhou is essential. If your product involves cosmetics packaging, leather components, denim garments, or jewelry elements, Guangzhou has the specialized factory clusters you need.
Panyu (番禺): Jewelry manufacturing (one of China's largest clusters), automotive parts (GAC Group suppliers), and precision machining. Hundreds of jewelry factories serving domestic and export markets.
Baiyun (白云): Cosmetics and personal care — a massive OEM/ODM cluster with 2025 output exceeding 800 billion RMB, accounting for 30% of China's total. Skincare, haircare, and makeup for domestic and export brands.
Huadu (花都): Leather goods, luggage, and bags — China's leather capital. Thousands of factories producing handbags, wallets, belts, and travel goods.
Nansha (南沙): Deep-water port, growing automotive base, and emerging semiconductor fabrication. The PRD's primary container port with bonded warehouse infrastructure.
Xintang (新塘): Denim and jeans capital. Produces a significant share of the world's denim garments. Thousands of factories in the denim supply chain.
Shiling (狮岭): Leather bags and accessories. One of China's largest handbag manufacturing clusters. Specialized in small leather goods, wallets, and belts.
Huangpu (黄埔): Biomedicine and advanced manufacturing. GAC Aion new energy vehicle production base. Growing biopharma cluster.
Semiconductor fabrication is a new focus, with government-backed fabs being established in Nansha. While still early-stage compared to Shanghai or Wuxi, the investment signals Guangzhou's ambition to move up the value chain.
Biomedicine in Huangpu is Guangzhou's fastest-growing tech sector. The biopharma cluster has attracted multinational pharma companies and domestic biotech startups, supported by proximity to Guangzhou's medical research universities.
New energy vehicles: GAC Aion's production base in Huangpu and a growing NEV components supply chain position Guangzhou as an automotive manufacturing hub alongside Shanghai and Shenzhen.
Guangzhou sourcing pitfalls
Canton Fair is overwhelming without a plan
Thousands of exhibitors across multiple venues. Without a pre-planned list of booths, you will waste days. Use the fair's online directory to pre-screen suppliers.
Cosmetics OEM requires regulatory knowledge
Baiyun factories serve different markets with different regulatory requirements (FDA, EU Cosmetics Regulation, CFDA). Know your target market's requirements before sourcing.
Leather goods quality spans the full range
Huadu factories range from luxury-grade to commodity. Be specific about leather grade, stitching standards, and hardware quality in your RFQ.
What founders should remember
Time your trip around the Canton Fair
April and October are the most efficient times to meet factories. The fair consolidates thousands of suppliers in one place.
Guangzhou is the logistics hub, not the manufacturing hub
Most PRD manufacturing happens in Shenzhen, Dongguan, and Foshan. Guangzhou is where you manage logistics and trade.
For cosmetics and leather, Guangzhou is the right starting point
Baiyun and Huadu have no equals in China for these categories. Start your factory search here.
